IMPORTANT.

68. The master of s.s. KAYING has made the following

personal report to me.

Part One.

At 1800 on September 27th in position latitude

22 27 north longtitude 100 15 11 East (? two) Male Chinese

were rescued from a raft suffering from extreme exposure

faces blackened and palms of hands and soles of feet had

been in water since September 22nd when their junk was

sunk by gunfire by Japanese (? submarine). They had an

empty water bottle with them. Enquiry shows that these

Chinese were survivors from same junks from which ten

were picked up by s.s. SCHARNHORST vide my 1302 September

29th. Junk was licensed in Hong Kong for (? group

omitted) purposes. Survivors now in hospital at Hong Kong

Part two.

3. At approximately 2130 on September 27th in

position 25 miles east north east of Waglan Lighthouse

S.S. KAYING observed a Japanese destroyer name unknown

open fire with what was thought to be machine gun fire

on two unknown junks who later were seen to be on fire.

Bullets of a red tracer type were observed. Before this

at approximately 1920, presumably the same destroyer had

questioned
